M&M's is a family-owned candy brand that originated in the United States in 1941. The brand is the flagship product of the Mars Wrigley Confectionery division of Mars, Incorporated. The name M&M comes from Forrest E. Mars Sr., the founder of Mars, and Bruce Murrie, the son of the president of Hershey Chocolate. The idea for M&M's came to Mars during the Spanish Civil War in the 1930s when he saw British soldiers eating chocolate pellets with hard chocolate shells. He decided to make his own chocolate candies and received a patent for them on March 3, 1941.
